SCREAMIN' FROM THE CHEAP SEATS by Leo Haggerty PFWA
SCREAMIN' FROM THE CHEAP SEATS. Who am I yelling at today? Screaming at any basketball coach and you better listen.
Rule #1 when defending an out of bounds play is to guard the inbounder. Never left the guy throwing the rock in to have an uninhibited look to throw it to who he wants without a different color jersey impeding that pass.
Sadly, Purdue forgot to follow Rule #1 and let me set the stage for you. The score is tied at 60-60 and Houston is taking the ball out under the Boilermakers basket with 2.2 seconds remaining in The Sweet Sixteen contest and Coach Matt Painter chose to not guard the inbounder. The Cougars run a set play and get the ball in and then immediately go back to the unguarded inbounder for an unmolested layup for the win.
I believe the only person who was happy to see this transpire was Coach Rick Pitino. He was coaching Kentucky in the 1992 Elite Eight game with Duke. With the Wildcats up 103-102 in overtime with 2.1 seconds left and the Blue Devils having to go the length of the floor and Coach P chose not to guard the inbounder. All Grant Hill did was throw an unmolested pass to the other free throw line to Christian Laettner who hit a jumper for the win as time expired.
That was the worst coaching move of all time when it came to leaving the inbounder unguarded. Until last night and now that distinction belongs to another Coach P.
Book it Dano.
