THOUGHTS FROM A SEPTUAGENARIAN by Leo Haggerty PFWA

THOUGHTS OF A SEPTUAGENARIAN. One opinion that has definitely changed during my almost 72 trips around the sun is what sporting event is the hardest to win. My answer may shock my most astute readers and viewers.

In my younger years it used to be all teams sports. Started with the Super Bowl but migrated to the Stanley Cup then it shifted gears completely to March Madness.

As I aged my thought process moved to individual sports. The Olympic track and field events moved to the forefront.

Then I had an epiphany and finally reached the conclusion that the most difficult sporting event to emerge victorious is a professional golf event and in particular one of the four Majors that are The Masters and the United States Open along with the British Open plus the PGA.

So, why did my thought process change so radically? Well, I finally did what I continuously implore you to do. I did the math.

First you're not trying to beat one individual or a team of 5 or 6 or 9 or 11 players. You're going against 156 of the worlds best golfers.

Second it's not a one day 18 hole horse race. It a 4 day 72 hole marathon and sometimes Mother Nature decides to get involved.

Finally you're not going directly against the opposition. You're going against the course. So if you're a couple strokes behind you cannot harass the leader verbally like in the movie Caddyshack or tackle your opponent as in the Michelob Ultra Light Super Bowl commercial.

Not saying winning any other sporting event is easy. Just saying from my point of view a PGA Tour event is the most difficult to emerge victorious.

Book it Dano!
